Although the master drummer improvises, the performance is not random. The drummer must understand the established rhythm, recognise the dancers’ movements, and know when to return to the main pattern.
Good performance practice requires:
- Listening carefully to the bell.
- Maintaining the supporting rhythm.
- Using clear hand strokes.
- Responding to the dancers.
- Avoiding unnecessary speed.
- Respecting the master drummer’s signals.
- Ending together as an ensemble.
The best performances combine freedom and discipline. The master drummer can be creative, but every variation must remain connected to the rhythmic foundation.
