Accra connects the diaspora to African history through places such as Jamestown, Ussher Fort, Christiansborg Castle, and the W.E.B. Du Bois Memorial Centre. These sites help people of African descent understand the history of the transatlantic slave trade, colonialism, Pan-Africanism, and Ghana’s role in African liberation.
This historical connection became especially prominent through Ghana’s Year of Return campaign in 2019, which marked 400 years since the first recorded enslaved Africans arrived in Jamestown, Virginia.
